The Waking

I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I cannot go.

We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.

Light takes the Tree, but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

50%

I got 12 out of 24. Of the main ones, I missed Best Supporting Actor and Best Picture but got all the others - Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, as well as Best Original Screenplay, Best Costumes, Best Documentary (feature), Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, Best Documentary (short subject), Best Sound Mixing, and Best Makeup.

Maybe next year I will watch more of the movies and choose based on actual knowledge instead of guessing on most of them. This year I saw The Queen, Little Miss Sunshine, Dreamgirls, and Pirates of the Caribbean 2.

How about Al Gore winning an Oscar? I'm glad he did.

I really want one of those Oscar 2007 posters.

Oscars and Other Awards

The new Oscar poster is neat. A larger picture of the poster and answers to the quotes are here.

Next Sunday night I'll be watching the Academy Awards show as usual. There are many impressive performances and movies this year, and I haven't seeen most of them. I'll have to see them after the Oscars. I did see The Queen and thought Helen Mirren was amazing. So was Michael Sheen who played Tony Blair. He even looks like him. I also saw Little Miss Sunshine which I liked but was surprised it was nominated. It was quirky and funny in a dark way. So it looks as if I'll be renting DVDs and going to movies to see these for sure: The Departed, Babel, Volver, The Devil Wears Prada, Dreamgirls, Notes on a Scandal, The Last King of Scotland, Blood Diamond, The Good German, The Good Shepherd, God Grew Tired of Us, Half Nelson, Letters from Iwo Jima, Venus, The Painted Veil, The Pursuit of Happyness, Little Children, and Flags of Our Fathers. Have any of you seen any of these?

I hope Al Gore wins for An Inconvenient Truth. I haven't seen it yet but plan to. So far I've seen the Golden Globes, BAFTA, but not SAG which I missed. The Independent Spirit Awards, which is always a fun awards show since it's laid back and and in a tent, will be on next Saturday.

The Dixie Chicks won five Grammy awards, and I'm glad. That was a good album. It fits in with my previous post about how sensitive people are and also how we aren't allowed to disagree with someone without repercussions. The radio stations didn't play their music, and people had the right not to attend their concerts if they didn't want to go. We live in America and fought wars to protect our right to criticize the government without going through death threats and other scary things they endured. Many of us hate what some of the right wing nuts say but don't burn their books in public displays of protest, ban them from television, or threaten to kill them. Mostly we make fun of them.

Weekend

I had an entertaining weekend catching up on the TV shows I'd recorded on the DVR, so I could make room for more. That's my favorite gadget!

One of my homebound students finished Saturday and went back to school today. She was a pleasure to work with and has quite a different life now that she has a baby at 16. I wish her well and hope for the best for her and her daughter.

I didn't watch the Super Bowl as usual but did hear about it and watched the interviews at the end of it. This blog has more written about the game than anything I've seen. The bloggers must have been typing while watching the game. I know about the blog because one of them left a comment on mine. Not sure how they got here, but it was interesting to look around theirs.

Hope you had a good weekend. I was glad to see some snow since it's nice to have a pretty one with no ice. School was out most of the week because so many students were absent because of the flu. I don't remember that happening before but heard that it did. I'm glad they had some time off to hibernate and enjoy being home. That's what I did this weekend mostly.

Does it seem to you that people are spending a lot of time apologizing lately? Mel Gibson, Michael Richards, Isaiah Washington, Joe Biden, etc., for example. And that coach got fired for one of those coach speeches they give to motivate the team. This was the one about "checking their manhood" which was questionable but not something to be fired over. On the one hand, I think some people are too sensitive and on the other that there are people who are saying things that are rude and out-of-line. I don't think apologies are worth much if the person isn't really sorry or doesn't plan to change. Some people are jerks. It's fine to take up for yourself when they offend you, but realize that everyone isn't going to be nice all the time. What do you think about all this?

Molly Ivins

What a tremendous loss it is that Molly Ivins died. I had the pleasure of hearing her speak at the Southern Festival of Books quite a few years ago. Ann Sensing and I went there primarily to hear Molly Ivins. I miss them both. Earl emailed me this tribute to her.
