The Waking

I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I cannot go.

We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.

Light takes the Tree, but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

Inadvertent Socializing

Earl stopped by here on his way to Florida to visit his three daughters who all live in different parts of the state. On his way there he also spends some time with his fellow physics major from college and friend in Alabama, who went on to get a PhD in physics while Earl went around being nominated for a Pulitzer for photojournalism while he worked for the Tallahassee Democrat. Since then he has been the State photographer and had other interesting jobs. Now he lives (we use the term loosely) in South Fulton, TN, and does some freelance work. His picture in on my photo album on one of his other trips to FL.

We went to Applebees to eat and had to wait quite a while for a table. While we were waiting, Marilyn Wade and I began one of our marathon conversations. Fortunately, Earl had the presence of mind to suggest they join us when our table was ready, so we had such a good time having dinner with Marilyn and her husband Les. It made me realize how much I need to do that some more. I really enjoyed the evening.
