The Waking

I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I cannot go.

We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.

Light takes the Tree, but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

First Week of the New Year

It's been an adjustment getting back into school. New classes, schedule, and students take a while to get used to. The main thing that's happened this week involves Mother. She had a colonoscopy in November which necessitated a couple of other procedures to determine the nature of an irregularity. She went to Horizon Wednesday for another colonoscopy to remove a polyp; however, they couldn't get to it and kept her overnight for surgery the next day. She had the surgery yesterday afternoon and will probably stay in the hospital for five days to a week, depending on how she does. She's feeling pretty rough now but is doing well.

Mother still can't have anything to eat or drink, not even liquids - just ice chips. She hasn't had anything to eat since Monday and won't for a while. That makes sense because part of her colon was removed. Janelle stayed with her last night, and we took turns today. I taught and went by this evening and just got home while ago. She's still groggy and sore, of course, but alert and sharp mentally. Amazing for 84 however you look at it.
