The Waking

I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I cannot go.

We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.

Light takes the Tree, but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

Night with Seinfeld and Friends

Saturday night four former students and I went to TPAC to see Jerry Seinfeld. I met Ben Buttrey and Julia Godwin in White Bluff and rode with them. By the way, Ben is an excellent driver as well as lots of fun. He and Julia and I laughed all the way to the Calypso Cafe where we met Daniel Jones, state-winning track star, and Jesse Hotchkins. Fortunately, they all liked the food at Calypso which I suggested. Then we went to Starbucks and on to TPAC. Most of our time involved trying to find a parking place. Jerry was hilarious just as we knew he'd be, so we all had a great time.

Ben and Daniel were two of my three student workers I had last year. The other one was Josh Burns. I'd taught Daniel and Josh in Challenge Class when they were younger, so I feel sort of like their aunt. On top of all this, I also taught Ben's and Daniel's fathers and Julia's mother, which makes them grandstudents. Yes, I'm really old. I thought it was really sweet that they wanted me to go with them. Daniel and some others had wanted to have a retirement party for me, so this was partly a retirement celebration. I appreciated that and the company. It was a wonderful evening!
