The Waking
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I cannot go.
We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.
Light takes the Tree, but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.
This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

Iceversary
Ten years ago today we had THE ICE STORM! I'll never forget the sound of tree limbs cracking and breaking, transformers exploding, and ice coating everything. My electricity and phone lines were out for a week. I've never been so bored in my life. Trees fell across my driveway, so I couldn't get out for two days. My brother came over with his chainsaw and made it possible for me to escape. I tried to get everything accomplished during the daylight which meant I had to read by flashlight (not too successful for long) and listen to the radio I'd put batteries in. If I could have talked on the phone, it would have helped. I like myself but not enough to spend that much time alone with cats in the dark. Just about everything I like to do involves electricity. It would be 8:00, and I'd think I might as well go to bed, but then if I did, I'd wake up around 2 or 3:00 when it would still be dark for several more hours. The nights were interminable! No way to cook, no hot water, food ruining in the refrigerator .... very bad!
So let's take a moment to remember the ice storm which traumatized us all and hope we don't get another one. They're calling for some snow tonight, but I'm not falling for that again. It's teased me before!
