The Waking
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I cannot go.
We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.
Light takes the Tree, but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.
This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

First to Go
Well, Paulina was the first to go. This is based on popularity as well as dancing, and not that many people know who she is. Billy Ray Cyrus looked surprised his name wasn't called. It's those Hannah Montana fans, I'm sure, and maybe some country music listeners. He's pretty bad.
Mother and I went to Green Hills to the dental hygienist this morning and then had lunch at Panera. It rained really hard and was foggy which made Mother so nervous that she didn't pay attention to how low the gas gauge was. We made it fine, but it was an expensive trip.
I have to work all day tomorrow and Saturday. If we can get the logistics worked out, I'm going with friends to Clarksville Saturday night to see Minton Sparks and am looking forward to it. Then Sunday Mother and I are going to see a play at the Renaissance Center that Tina is in. Several social events are coming up that will be fun. Pretty weather, fun times!

It's Back!!
Yes, Dancing with the Stars has returned. I'm right there watching and have favorites. Based on how they're dancing so far, those who should be in there the longest are Apolo Ohno, Joey Fatone, Laila Ali, and probably Ian Ziering. Cheryl Burke seems subdued for some reason. I wonder if she doesn't enjoy dancing with her partner this time. It was obvious she had fun dancing with Drew Lachey and Emmit Smith and won with both of them. She's a good choreographer and has an amazing, enviable body. I'd like to experience how it feels to look like that. I loved watching Apolo skate during the Olympics and am glad he's on this. He's my favorite. Joey Fatone is fun to watch and has those boy band moves. Laila Ali dances well and is dancing with major hottie Maksim. I love looking at him! She looks a lot like her father and is pretty like he always said he was. I'm impressed with her poise and personality. Who knew John Ratzenberger was quite the dancer? He's 72! Wish I could move like that!
Billy Ray Cyrus is in the Master P category but at least wears dancing shoes. He really improved last night from the first week. He will probably be the first one to go unless those Hannah Montana fans vote for him. Leeza Gibbons, Shandi Finnessey, Paulina Porizkova, and Clyde Drexler are in that middle category and very likeable. Heather Mills is doing amazingly well and is donating her pay to the animal rights organization she publicizes. She said in interviews that women who marry Beatles have been vilified in the press, but I haven't noticed that in the US except for her at times and of course Yoko. She said Linda had been, but I didn't read anything that negative about her or about Ringo's and George's wives. I don't know about in the UK and how it has been there.
The first results show is on tonight. Who can trust the way Americans vote, so we'll see.

All the Damage, None of the Highs
I watched part of HBO's special on addiction. This man was being shown images of his brain and a healthy brain. He'd been using cocaine and other drugs for quite a while - often and a lot. The doctor showed him how his brain didn't have some areas in it that were defined and red on the image and how some parts of it were missing. She compared his to the healthy one to emphasize how much damage he'd done to his brain. Then she said to him in a disapproving, grim way that his brain looked like one that was sixty years old. Damn.

Brian has a cute photo of Brendan the Meercat Boy from their trip to the zoo Sunday. Check it out here. He also has information about a systems administrator position where he works if any of you might be interested or know someone who is.

Update on Mother
We went to see the glaucoma specialist again today and got a good report on Mother's eyes. The pressure in her right eye is low enough that she probably won't have to do anything else to it, and her left eye will most likely require drops from now on since there is some scarring around the drain which keeps the pressure just a bit too high. Still, this is so much better than it was, so the surgery was definitely successful. We don't go back until a month this time and have been going weekly since December. Dr. Dr. Howard (she has a PhD and an MD) will be leaving us to go to California because she's getting married. It's Nashville's loss for sure. I told her I was really glad she was here to do Mother's surgery, and Dr. Howard said she'd make sure she was in good shape before she moved. She won't ever have a problem building a practice. Mother had the best and is doing so well.

Life as I Know It
I thought teaching was sedentary until I work at the vitamin place when Jim is off. I'm there by myself for eight hours with customers coming in sporadically. I'm in that one room all day without much movement except for going to the mailbox and taking out the trash. Occasionally products arrive that I have to price and shelve. I vacuum, clean, and restock the refrigerator with water. Otherwise, I'm there working crossword puzzles, reading, and listening to books on tape while sitting in a chair. It's like being in solitary confinement in some ways since I can't leave. At least with teaching I had long halls to walk down. I was standing while teaching and moving around the room. I was more active and could tell the difference. Let this be a lesson to me to me. I'm not sure what that means except that I need to get to the gym on a regular basis.

Wow!
Jenna Bush has a book deal. Yes. That's right. A BOOK deal. And it's about a teen single-mother in Panama who has HIV. No comment I could make would do this justice. Right? She's an intern with UNICEF in Central and South America after teaching elementary school in Washington, DC, for a year and a half. I'd like to think that she quit teaching after dealing with No Child Left Behind.

Spoiled by Technology
The DVR, my favorite gadget, has spoiled me because not only does it record TV shows but will also rewind and pause in real time. It does that and fast-forward so I can miss the commercials when I watch recorded shows. I was in the movie theater and wanted to rewind so I could hear something again I wasn't sure about. At home I've even wanted to rewind the radio when listening to one of my favorite NPR shows. See what I mean?

Media
Cold Case had an episode Sunday night about a girl who was 17 and in a Catholic home for unwed mothers. They were investigating her murder. If you haven't seen that show, they go back in time to show the people as they were around the time of the murder as well as how they are now. The writer Jennifer Johnson got it down perfectly the way it was. The show was well-done and made me cry. I'm glad the truth is getting out there in several different ways, so I sent them an email of praise.
There are some excellent books about all that, too. The Girls Who Went Away, The Same Smile, and Healing the Hole in a Heart are just some of the ones on this subject. I can track my life by my bookshelves. And check out Jan's blog linked over there on the left - First Parents.
I've been watching the political shows again (Bill Maher, Keith Olbermann, Jon Stewart) but then have to rush to HGTV and look at houses. There's just so much I can stand of all that without getting angry or depressed. Besides, I really like to look in houses.

Blogging
I haven't posted that much this year. Not having my archives and not being able to get in touch with Google/Blogger has been more than frustrating. I tried and tried and couldn't find any way to contact them. I know they have them somewhere since Google keeps everything.
It's as if they have wiped out my history as a blogger. I want it back.
