The Waking

I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I cannot go.

We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.

Light takes the Tree, but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

Oscars

As usual I watched the Oscars and mentioned the winners in that post of the nominees. I now have my movie watching cut out for me. I missed all of the main ones and plan to see them. The ones I watched have to do with having grandchildren - The Incredibles, Shrek 2, Lemony Snicket, and Shark Tale. I also watched the documentary Super Size Me as well as Collateral and Independent Spirit nominees The Door in the Floor and Garden State (which won and was quite good). Now I am going to see Ray, Million Dollar Baby, The Aviator, Sideways, Being Julia, Hotel Rwanda, Finding Neverland, Closer, Maria Full of Grace, Vera Drake, Eternal Sunshine, Motorcycle Diaries, Kinsey, and others. Quite a list. I wait to watch some on DVD and will be watching most of those that way. I can see some during Spring Break week after next. I'm looking forward to that time off and am so excited about retirement, which I now call graduation! It's going to be great!! Can hardly wait!

Storm Damage

Check out the photos on the home page of the high school where Janey and I used to teach. The school is across the by-pass from my house. Thank goodness school wasn't in session. With all that broken glass and twisted metal, students, teachers, and others would have been hurt and possibly killed. It's scary with all the wires and damage there. They say it was from straight winds, but I think it was a tornado. What do you think?

They won't be back at school for weeks. It's just a week and a half until spring break, so that will give them time. Not sure what will happen with the rest of the schools in the county. I'm sure we'll go back while they are off. Who knows?

Click where it says Storm Photos.

Windbird

WSMV (local channel 4 news) has Snowbird, a puppet who announces when we have no school. Because all the wind and thunderstorms this morning that damaged the high school in Dickson, we have no school tomorrow. There was a lot of damage with roofs being blown off of parts of the buildings. I'm not sure how much water damage happened, but all the school maintenance workers will be needed to clean up and repair what they can. What we're wondering is if the whole county will be off the rest of the week while DCHS is closed. We haven't used any of our eleven built-in snow days which would help for that. Thank goodness this happened on a vaction day since it's Presidents Day today because students would have been in the walkway and rooms where damage happened. Here's a report on it. From what I understand, creeeks are high and will get worse when it keeps raining. I'll keep you posted.

The country club was also damaged from wind and falling trees.

Everything went quickly this morning. The scan didn't take but about 15 minutes.. I'll hear results when I see Dr. Spigel April 4. I guess I'll know nothing is bad if I don't hear from him before then. I don't expect to.

Yuck

I have to get up much earlier than I usually do and want to in the morning to drive to Nashville for a CAT scan at 7:50! An hour before my appointment I have to drink 900 ml of barium sulfate suspension - what fun. This means I have to get up at 5:00-ish to get ready and give myself time to drink it. I guess I'll do it more than an hour before, so I can drive and not spill it and gag while I'm driving. My metabolism is slow, so that will be OK. When I get there, I have radioactive glucose intravenously and sit in a darkened room for about 45 minutes. This time I won't have the iodine because I'm allergic to it, but it reacts with the glucose for contrast or something. The worst part of being in that tube is having to hold my arms over my head in a cramped space because my shoulders bother me. I don't have claustrophobia; it's just the whole ordeal. As you can tell, I don't want to do this.

On a positive note, there was an interview with Melissa Etheridge on Dateline where she talked about her appearance on the Grammy Awards. It was what I thought - her adrenaline gave her the energy to get up there and perform "Piece of My Heart" so energetically and powerfully. Any of us who have been through chemo know she's right when she described how horrible it was. I hope I never have to go through it again and am so glad I survived all of that. It's still scary remembering it and the reason I don't like to have scans and be reminded of it.

WGA Awards

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind by Charlie Kaufman and Sideways won screenwriting awards from the Writers Guild. The screenplay for Sideways, written by Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, was based on Rex Pickett's novel. I was glad to read that Tony Kushner won for Angels in America which was on HBO but is for rent on DVD. I watched Something the Lord Made on HBO yesterday. Peter Silverman and Robert Caswell won the writing award, and the actors (Alan Rickman and Mos Def) will be nominated for an Emmy for it if not already. It's about Dr. Alfred Blalock and Vivien Thomas who pioneered cardiac surgery and is the story of their collaboration with Dr. Helen Taussig during segregation and times when no one thought the heart could sustain surgery. HBO takes chances and produces quality shows. Have any of you seen these?

Question

Did any of you watch the Grammys last night? How on earth was Melissa Etheridge able to perform with all that energy during treatment for breast cancer? Her head is nicely shaped, and she looked great. I'm amazed and in awe of how she was able to sing so powerfully.

Words

Kelsey was 11 Thursday and called to thank me for her present. We had a good conversation. During it, we mentioned some things I was planning to do after I retire. One of the main things I'm looking forward to is spending time with the grandchildren. I also mentioned that I was going to do some writing. Kelsey said she thought that I'd do well writing books because I "know so many good words." That was cute and flattering.

Interesting

While reading articles about Arthur Miller's recent death, I noticed that his daughter Rebecca is married to Daniel Day-Lewis, which I didn't know. They met while D-L was at Miller's house doing preliminary work on The Crucible, which we recently studied, and Death of a Salesman is on the summer reading list assigned for my honors English III class.

Fortunately, while I was looking up things on the movie internet database, I noticed that the BAFTA awards will be shown tonight on BBC-America. I would have missed it and really do like that awards show. First of all, Stephen Fry is the host which makes it hilarious. I'm looking forward to watching it. So British! (which is always a good thing)

I just tuned into BBC-A and discovered the BAFTA awards are on now (time difference and all). Here is a list of the winners.

Does it bother anyone else that September, October, November, and December should have continued to be the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th months respectively? Do word origins mean nothing to these people?
