The Waking
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I cannot go.
We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.
Light takes the Tree, but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.
This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

Links
I'm Chebley Nuttock to one blogger. To another I'm a den mother. Whatever I'm called or not labeled, I appreciate being linked. Thanks to all of you who did! It was an unexpected honor. :-) Some of the linkers are Alistair, Karl, Bored Brit, Veralynne, Sharon, and Miel. If I've left anyone off, please let me know.

Lotto
Earl and I didn't win the lottery again. I was hoping Butch & Janelle and Earl & I would win it since it had gotten over $200 million. Would have been very helpful. I do about as well with lotteries as I do (did) with men - probably the same odds.

Trivia Quiz
Here's our last quiz of 2003 and the first of 2004, depending on when you see it. As always, guess, be correct, be clever and witty, add information, but have fun with it all! Kathy gave me the Pop Culture edition of Trivial Pursuit for Christmas, so I'm using it. There are different categories on this one.
1. Movies - Where was Rain Man allowed to drive slowly?
2. TV - Who played sensational aide Billy Bob Davis on the John Ritter sitcom Hearts Afire?
3. Music - How many times does the word "MMM" appear in the title of Crash Test Dummies' song?
4. Sports/Games What 1980s soft-rock band had an arcade game, featuring animated band members?
5. Buzz - Charlton Heston has described that what would have to be pried from his "cold dead hands"?
6. Fads - What is Ali Landry better known as?
I know #'s 1, 2, and 5. No clue about the others, so I peeked at the answers.
Answers:
1. In the driveway
2. Billy Bob Thornton
3. Four
4. Journey
5. His gun
6. The Doritos Girl

Photos
I posted new pictures of Kathy and the children and Brendan. I had such a good time at Kathy's. It was a really comfortable, relaxed, fun visit. I watched Finding Nemo with the kids and enjoyed it. Kathy does such a great job taking care of three children, keeping the house clean and organized, doing laundry every day, managing schedules, cooking, and everything! The children are well-loved and in good hands. I continue to be amazed by our reunion and relationship. I wasn't sure I'd ever see her again, much less be part of Kathy's life. Wonderful, huh? :-)

Visit
I just got back from visiting Kathy and had a great time. I watched Finding Nemo a couple of times with the grandchildren. It's good, and we had fun watching and commenting. I'll post some pictures and tell more about it tommorrow. I stopped by Brian and Melissa's on the way back and got to hug, kiss, and be with all four grandchildren and both children. How good is that! Brendan started saying, "Mama" on the Winter Solstice.

Christmas
I hope all of you had a Christmas that was as good as the one I had. We had all the family there and enjoyed playing games, eating, and visiting. We opened presents and had a good time watching Brendan chew the bows at his first Christmas. Next Christmas we'll be having a babelicious baby fest! Amy and Chris are having a girl in April, and Angela and Andy are having a baby in August. Angela thinks it will be a boy. We'll see.
Brian and Melissa stuck around all afternoon, so we got to spend lots of time with them and Brendan. It was great! He's about to crawl, sits, and stands while holding on to fingers. Brendan is a happy, healthy, secure baby. They're doing a great job with him.
I'm going to Kathy's next to see them. I'm really looking forward to that. I talked to her on the phone yesterday and wished them a Merry Christmas. They were putting batteries in new games and assembling toys. Mark's mother spent the night. I'm really glad since her husband died a few months ago, and holidays are really hard - especially first ones. They had a good marriage, traveled a lot, did all kinds of fun things, and were really happy. I think they've been married around 10 years, so she was around my age, I guess, when they got married. She's such a good person and wonderful grandmother.
I put new pictures on the photo album. Then I'll have more after I visit Kathy. Check them out. Click to make them larger. To family - right click to save for yourself.

Winter Solstice
Winter is officially here and longer days are beginning. I can't help but think about a friend who said she got married on the longest night of the year but was complaining about it.
I like having four seasons and experiencing the changes with each even though fall and spring are my favorites. I lived in Charleston, SC, for a few years and missed the colors of fall, trees that lose their leaves and are uncluttered with Spanish moss, snow, and hills. There were two seasons there - hot and muggy or cool and damp. I enjoyed living in Virginia Beach. It was really neat seeing snow on the beach and experiencing how different the ocean feels in the winter.
We all have a sense of place where we feel at home and the weather suits our clothes. There's something about central Arizona that I love. I discovered that low humidity is the secret of happiness. I feel so good there, have energy, can breathe, and am fascinated by the way it looks. When I retire, I'd like to spend more time there. There's England of course and those other places I liked on our trip to Europe. Going back there is something else I hope to do. There's nothing like experiencing a place and learning about it by being there.
I like the lush greeness of Tennessee which is the result of all this humidity. Ironic, I guess. My family and many friends are here, so it's home. I'm not sure about my sense of place. Perhaps I need to travel more.

Cleaning Problems
I have a scary feeling my Rainbow vacuum cleaner is about to burst into flames. While ago when I was vacuuming with it, I smelled a sort of scorching smell. When I looked at it, there was a flickering light very similar to a flame-like spark though the opaque casing over the motor. Anyone know about this? I'm going to call the Rainbow distributor tomorrow and take it there for them to check. I hope they can fix it soon and that it's not very expensive. I really do like that vacuum cleaner - especially with cats! Here I am finally vacuuming, and it seems on the verge of combustion! So of course I want to clean now that I can't use my vacuum cleaner. Wish it luck!

Good News
At the risk of sounding like that man on the commercial who goes around telling everyone he's lowered his cholesterol, so have I! I had an appointment with Dr. Ross today after school after having blood work done this morning before school. I've been on that low-carb diet outlined in Protein Power, the book Dr. Ross told me to read. At least I was on it until I had the flu when I couldn't eat for a while and still mostly want bland food - chicken noodle soup, crackers, turkey sandwiches, and such as that - with carbs. To my credit, I've left off sweets, Cokes, pizza, potatoes, and dairy products as well as most other things high in carbs. When I told Dr. Ross this, he asked why he thought something else was going to follow. So I said, "However, it's grossed me out to think about meat and eggs and most food." He recognized my outstanding ability to rationalize. I really am good at it and can rationalize anything. I told him I was going to get back on this as soon as I could face that food.
The wonderful thing is that even not doing this according to plan, my cholesterol went from 216 to 180, glucose from 156 to 99, and triglycerides from 694 to 179!! Yea!! When I go back to see him again in 3 months, all those will be even better! They lowered because of diet, not meds. That's one of the many things I really like about him. Most other doctors would have put me on meds and not have mentioned diet as a first treatment. I'm so glad I happened upon him and that he's my internist now. I really do like him and his approach to healing. He said our goal is to get me off the blood pressure meds, too, which I'm all for. I'm not taking hormone replacement therapy now and didn't have much trouble during the transition. I guess my body really doesn't need them now since I became psycho before without them. My goal is to be off of any medication as long as possible, and now I have a doctor who has that same philosophy. Yea!!
They are having more problems getting blood from me than they used to, and Butch's and my veins are awful. They hide, roll over, and play dead. We inherited them from Mother. Now after chemo they are even worse. Chemo burns veins on the inside and leaves scar tissue. I asked if they ever get back to normal, but he didn't know. Dr. Spigel is always so positive that it's hard to get him to tell about bad stuff. I'll try to get it out of him. The phlebotomist said they get better after 18 months to 2 years, so I hope she's right. I haven't found anything about it online yet. Chemo is controlled poison, so it does much more than kill cancer cells.
I rambled on, didn't I? I was thinking this morning how easy it is after a while to become a "professional" patient. Sorry!!

We're Doomed!
It turns out that chemobrain has merit as a condition. Studies have shown that chemo decreases IQ and that people who have had it don't do math in their heads afterwards. For some reason, chemobrain is worse for women with breast cancer than with lymphoma. I've wondered just what side-effects chemo has and what it will do to us long-term.
Then on top of this, information is out now on the effects of mercury in tuna and how it causes brain damage. I've eaten tuna fish salad very often in my life and still do. I've also spent many years drinking Diet Cokes from aluminum cans. More brain damage and who-knows-what from aspartame and the can! Lymphoma is on the list of related diseases.
So here we are (as Charlie commented in our conversation last night on the phone) created to require food and water to live, and what we eat and drink kills us. We can't eat, drink, breathe, or anything else without risk. What do we do about it?

Freak Out
There's an article in The Onion about a substitute teacher who went ballistic with a 3rd period freshman class. Hmmm, it made me think about my own 3rd block freshman English class who were the only ones that both substitutes complained about when I was out sick with the flu. She exclaimed to me when I got back that they acted like she wasn't even up there. I told her I understood perfectly and was glad she had them do write-offs. One of the students overheard the sub talking to the principal about them. The principal told the sub they were my delinquent class but that I loved them anyway. It takes a lot of energy and firmness to control them. I've asked them if they have ever been in school before or if they came in from the wild and just decided to attend school this year. It doesn't phase them. They don't have appropriate school manners. I know what that substitute in the article went through, and she's right about not getting paid enough to put up with this. Amen!

Marriage and other Institutions
I was thinking about some married couples other day and couldn't believe they are still married after 20 or 30 years or more. I remember conversations with one or both of them years ago and how miserable they were - not to mention how they acted with and to each other. I realize many people are shocked when people get a divorce and so am I in some cases; however, I'm more surprised that some keep on with the endurance contest. Really odd to me. Perhaps their expectations are low. I did read somewhere in a blog (Subversity's, I think - if not, please let me know) that expectation is the foreplay of disappointment. I agree since others don't follow our scripts and we set up unrealistic expectations.
Maybe that's my problem with relationships. I expect too much from them. They should be easy though and not such a struggle (power and in general). Most people treat strangers better than the person they've chosen to love and put before others. Seems that what happens most of the time is a meshing of neuroses that intensify the problems each person has. They seek out someone who will reinforce how they think they deserve to be treated and what they are used to unless they get help and move past it. I grew up in a functional family and am fairly well-adjusted. It's hard to find someone else who is and isn't still in one of those good marriages. Although I'm some people's worst nightmare since I'm an old lady who lives alone with cats now, it's not that bad. Compared to some alternatives, it's great actually. I'm not lonely and can be as busy or lazy as I want to be.
The definitive book on relationships is The Missing Piece Meets the Big O by Shel Silverstein. Despite the provocative title and its being shelved in the children's book section, that book speaks volumes with line drawings and few words about personal growth and relationships. Check it out.

Heigh-ho Heigh-ho!
Yes, I'm going back to work tomorrow. It would be nice to think they'd give me a break, but they are after all teenagers and aren't quite human. Two days with a substitute is approaching critical mass with them, so I need to get back. My fever is down to normal now, but I'm still really weak. I plan to sit in my tall chair behind my podium quite a bit. One of the kids asked me why I had one of those chairs and none of the other teachers did. I told him I bought it myself. He said, "Oh, then we'd better take care of it since it's yours. I see why you don't want us sitting in it." Odd bit of logic. They are drawn to that chair for some reason and most of them want to sit in it and roll around. I told them where they could buy one just like it, but that's not the same. It's just a tall office chair, so I don't have to stand all day but am tall enough behind the podium while we're going over assignments. I usually walk around when I'm explaining things and write on the board. Aren't you glad you know this?

Killer Flu
I didn't go to work today and will be off again tomorrow. I hope to go back Wednesday. My fever has gone down, and I feel really weak. Some people get this flu again. I hope I don't! I hate it! It's really awful!
I have some new pictures from Thanksgiving at Mother's in the photo album.
Do I need to discontinue the trivia quiz or perhaps post it every two weeks instead of weekly? There isn't as much participation now, but that might be because a couple of the ones who did answer are busy now.

Saturday Night Fever (couldn't resist)
Fever dreams are surreal and tiring. When I was a child, I had recurring dreams when I ran a fever. Doctors made house calls then, and the only one we had in our town lived two houses away from us. He asked Mother how I was doing, and she told him better after she got the rocks out of my bed. She humored me like that because they were very real and heavy. Another time I dreamed the children on my pajamas were too loud and kept making noise. Somehow she got them quiet. The dream that I'd have over and over, though, was one in which I had to follow this maze on paper which was made up of all kinds of lines like spaghetti. Washington and Napoleon and their troops were riding toward each other from a distance, and I had to sort out the maze to keep them from going to battle. It was all on me and very stressful. The dream would switch from the maze to their riding closer and closer toward each other. Usually I woke up before the battle began but not always. Then the soldiers would be on horseback and fight each other with swords.
Last night I dreamed during my fever which is ranging between 101-102 about a Hispanic Thanksgiving cooking contest. There were subcategories and all kinds of rules and lots and lots of people cooking, yelling, and speaking to the judges. One of the groups was Ritchie Valens's family. They claimed to have proof that he and Donna (high school sweetheart who inspired "Oh, Donna") got married and that she was four months pregnant when he died in the plane crash. I was arguing with my dream while dreaming it and kept saying to myself that wasn't true. Their daughter Donna (how unoriginal to name her that) spoke and read a song to the people there. During the dream I said that was Buddy Holly whose wife was pregnant the day the music died and that Ritchie was only 17, and they were barely able to see each other. See, even in fever-induced dreams, I know my pop culture trivia. Someone commented that Valens was played by an aging Jack Nicholson in the movie La Bamba, so I had to argue once again since Lou Diamond Phillips hardly qualifies. It was a very weird dream.
All the food was too much - all kinds of dishes and menus and entries. The judges announced so many winners of various categories that I almost didn't care who won even though Brian was in one of the groups who entered. I never found out how his group did.

Still Flu
It's boring to be sick. I guess it's good I got this while I'm off from school since it's almost as hard to be off and plan for a substitute as it is to be there. My back is sore from coughing. My fever has gone down some though, thank goodness. This is reminiscent of when I ran that fever after chemo, only this time I can sleep since I'm not taking Prednisone.
Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.

Flu
Once again the flu shot people miscalculated. I had a flu and pneuminia shot early in November, and now I have flu that's not covered by the flu shot and feel really bad. I have a temperature over 102 and sleep most of the time. It struck all of a sudden, and I slept in the recliner at Mothers all afternoon. I hope I didn't give it to anyone. I went to Dr. Ross today and waited a long time since there were only three doctors taking care of adults. $93 of meds! Yikes!

Day Off
Butch won't get to come home until tomorrow. They need to watch him longer and make sure everything is OK.
I didn't post the answers to that last trivia quiz because I thought there might be others who want to answer.
I'll be out and about today taking care of things while places are open. I've been on the low-carb diet and am feeling better. My triglycerides were very high and glucose was higher than it needs to be, so I'm trying hard here. Don't what to be diabetic or have heart disease. I told Dr. Ross I'd been celebrating overcoming cancer by eating whatever I wanted to and having lots of chocolate. He said that was fine and had its place but now I needed to take care of my heart. He has a point. What I didn't mention is that I've been doing this much longer than that, but I'm sure he could tell. :-) So when I get my insulin receptors back to normal and have lost weight and all that good stuff, I'll be able to branch out some in moderation. The main thing is that I'll be healthier and feel good again. It's been so long since I've felt really good that I've almost forgotten how it is.

A Post
OK, posting a trivia quiz isn't the same as writing an entry in my blog. I did have to choose a card from the box, think about the answers, wonder who would answer the questions. and type it, though. Oh no, not a fly-by-night type of deal here! I'm a professional quizzer. Yes, I do that for a living and much more!
Interesting article when I logged onto blogger.com today about a guy at Microsoft who lost his job because of his blog. Interesting times, huh? I'm posting this at school during my planning period, by the way. :-) Your taxpayer money put to good use!
What are you Americans doing for Thanksgiving? We're going to Mother's and will enjoy that. Butch went back into the hospital yesterday because of trouble with that same area that's been bothering him around one of the stents. He should be home tomorrow and is doing well.
We're actually off tomorrow! This is great getting Wednesday off as well as Thursday and Friday! I'm so glad!

This 'n That
When I logged on to Blogger, I read something funny. Check it out here at Blogger. There was an article in The Onion about a 30 year old guy whose mother discovered his blog. He was in a panic about what to do, so Blogger decided to have an opinion about it and gave some suggestions. This isn't a problem for me since I began this as a public way to give information about dealing with lymphoma and sent the link out to people I know, am related to, and work with; therefore, I censor some things. I know it's been a problem for some bloggers I link to, though. I've read that some people have lost jobs because of what they wrote in their blogs and others have damanged relationships. I watch Law & Order and realize the net isn't private, and our computers have all our lives we live in cyberspace on them. It's really tempting to believe this is private since we type in the comfort of our homes and have readers we think about when we post. I'm not paranoid about someone finding out my name and email address even though many people are. Big Brother is already too involved in our lives as it is, and I do think about that. However, I will continue to write what I do and be glad you are reading it.

Yesterday
We had such a good time visiting with each other! It was so good to see Paige again and spend some time with her. Virginia is doing well and has a very positive attitude. I have a good feeling about her and know she's going to get through this with a clean bill of health. Cancer is an awful disease and the treatments are horrific. There's no way around that part. It sucks! She's going to make it though. Her husband Ken and daughter Becky are funny to be around, and I always enjoy being with all of them. Regina and I had lots of conversation on the drive there. Neither of us is at a loss for words and just talked and talked! It was the best day with wonderful company!
Virginia's house looks so good. She and her sister Rebecca learned how to decorate and arrange things from Paige. I got home and wanted to move! Too bad about the house down there, so I'll just have to make the one I'm in cleaner and organized. It's overwhelming but doable.
While comparing notes with Virginia, I realized the reason I'm not taking this high blood pressure as seriously as I would have before dealing with cancer. It's like, oh, I need to go on a diet and take some pills. No problem! I can do that.

Happenings
Mother is OK but wrecked her car today. She ran into a culvert, she said, and the car just fell apart on the right side. She called Butch and had lots of help from passers-by. I told her that she needs to get a cell phone to have for emergencies, and I think she will. Now she's going to also need to get a new car. If any of you know of anyone who has one to sell that's safe and has been taken care of, let us know. Thanks.
I'm going to see Virginia tomorrow in Lawrenceburg where my new house isn't. Her mother Paige will be there to stay with her during her radiation treatments. Virginia has breast cancer and has finished chemo. She's doing pretty well, but it's going to be so good to see her again, as well as Paige. I've missed her so much and think about Virginia all the time. I'm going to ride with her friend from high school Regina. I taught her and her daughter and late husband. It should be a really good day. I'm looking forward to it.
I went to see Dr. David Ross Thursday after school about my blood pressure and thyroid. I like him. My blood pressure has been high for a few months, and I've been taking something prescribed by that endocrinologist I didn't like. I'm taking a new kind along with the old ones and go back to see him Thursday. He also said for me to buy Protein Power which is a low-carb diet. I went in Friday morning for all kinds of blood work in order to have a baseline to compare with later on. So I'll be on a diet soon and will finally end the longest ever working-up-to-a-diet time period. It's been years!! Sort of like how long I've been talking about getting my house organized and clean. I'm determined to feel good again and will do what I need to.

Information, Please
My toolbar has gone awry. It's rearranged itself, and the icons that were on there have moved over to the right in a drop-down menu. The back button is on the right now, too. It looks plain and sort of blank. I don't know what happened to it. Any ideas? I can't get it back the way it was.

Trivia Quiz
Here it is! Another quiz for my clever friends!
1. PP - What did it take American billionaire philanthropist J. Paul Getty 25 years to get that none of his money could buy?
2. AE - What noteworthy sisters wrote also under the names Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell?
3. HS - What acronym was the result of the translation of the Russian words abbreviated CCCP?
4. SN - What is the term for a violent tropical cyclone that originates in the West Pacific?
5. SL - Who is the highest elected official to finish a marathon while in office? (this should generate some funny answers)
6. WC - What does the VIN on an automobile stand for?
7. MV - This is a romantic comedy. The most memorable catch phrase of 1996 came from this film. A dancing/egomaniacal Rod Tidwell is a main character.

Gnu Attitude
Here I am at school after going over part of Act III of Romeo and Juliet and some grammar. With 90-minute classes, it's necessary to have variety. I watched a rerun of Third Rock from the Sun last night in which Dick (John Lithgow) was directing Romeo and Juliet for Tommy's class. Tommy wanted to be Romeo since his girlfriend was Juliet because there were so many make-out scenes. Dick was outraged (dramatically) and asked him what he thought R&J had to do with a bunch of horny teenagers. Good one! These kids recognize that pretty well which is why I suppose it's in the 9th grade literature book.
I decided last night to be glad I'm feeling better and can work and to enjoy what I'm doing. It's good I'm here now to be able to do things. I also decided to go around my house while I clean, sort, and organize and be thankful for what I have and to let go of what I don't need anymore. That works metaphorically for other things as well. Who knows? Maybe I'll get it all together eventually. I am working on changing my attitude and how I look at things, so that's a step.

Well it looks as if there weren't enough entries for the house contest. Check out this update. Guess it's not going to happen. I'm sure all of the entrants are disappointed but probably not as much as the owners of the house are. I hope they sell it and are able to move to Canada. As for me, I'll move on now to other fantasies.

Sad News
I've been part of an online NHL support group and kept up with the people on there but haven't read the posts much since summer. One of the women on there, Judy Weinstein, and I kept in touch for a while since she read my blog and had one herself. I have a link to her blog Finding Joy in the Midst of Cancer Treatment on here. She's had several rounds of different kinds of treatment and a difficult struggle with lymphoma. I was happy to read that she went back home and could eat real food again. There haven't been any posts since the beginning of June, so I hadn't read her blog for a while. I admired how she kept doing things she liked as much as possible and even met a man she enjoyed spending time with around a year ago. Judy was the one who copied and pasted Brian's posts when I was in the hospital for the NHL group to let them know how I was. Last night I decided to see what was going on with her and found out she died two months ago. The man she's been seeing posted it as a final chapter to her blog. This is sad news, and I mourn the loss of Judy. I went back to read posts on the group and read what her sister-in-law wrote about her. What a tribute this is .....
Dear all,
This note is the hardest I've ever had to write. My dear sister-in-law and dear friend of 36 years, Judith Weinstein, died last night. She spent the past month in and out of the hospital, and it was just so hard to watch...not the way she wanted to live.
Judy was one of the kindest, most inspirational people I've ever known. We met as kids and truly grew up together. We shared life, marriage, divorce, kids, gains, losses...and much Truth together.
My respect for Judy, how she lived...the way she loved...and for the way she also died knows no bounds. She planned the way she wanted her death to happen and it all came to pass. In the weeks before her death, she said good-bye to everyone close to her. She healed the very few last relationships that had any glitches left....and she made sure that her kids were cared for, and that every possible detail was carefully in place so as to minimize any extra challenges for those who loved her.
In the end, she was surrounded by loved ones, we held her and loved her through the transition from this lifetime, and her poor tired body, into whatever comes next. Never really experienced so much love...before.
Letting Judy go was the hardest thing I've ever done. May we all commit, again, to fighting this disease, to the discovery of a cure...and to controlling the one thing we can--the way we love each other. Judy has set the bar very, very high....
Sadly, and with gratitude for your support to both Judy and to me,
nan, aka pooh
I'm thankful for my recovery and glad to be here and am reminded once again of how serious this disease can be. It's is taking a while to get over the effects of chemo and the entire experience. I'm making progress. Thanks to all of you who have been and are here for me. You don't know how much I appreciate you. Hugs to you all!

Progressive Recovery
I was thinking recently how about how good I feel now - more energy and stamina. I'm able to get through the day without feeling wiped out and am generally doing pretty well - better than I have in years. The odd thing is that it's all relative. Since I was recovering from near-death a year ago, just about anything was an improvement. I kept thinking I felt good until I felt better and realized how bad I'd been feeling before. So I wonder what's next and how where I am now will look through the rear-view mirror. Somehow this makes sense to me.
Something that's really hard for me but that I need to learn to do is ask for help. It's been offered, and I kept thinking I could do what I needed to get done without whining and being a wimp. Apparently not. There are some things I am going to have to get help with, so I'm going to suck it up and accept it and be glad there are people willing to do it. Somehow I'm able to teach though and keep up with all of that. I'm just not doing any extras.
It's been bad enough to go through all this without beating myself up for not doing better and feeling guilty about it.
It was OK being back at school today. I didn't dread going back but will be delighted when I can retire. It was good to see people again, and I like being there at Creek Wood. I got four new students in that infamous class I told you about who returned to school after being at the alternative school. Hope they've been rehabilitated. I don't know what they did to get in there, but I know what a process it is to have them sent to it. Wish me luck!!

Skool Daze
As I'm preparing to return for the second quarter of this first term tomorrow, I've been thinking more about what I hope to accomplish and how to get there. I like this schedule we have - 2 weeks off after every 9 weeks. This makes one grading period four weeks and the other one five weeks. Each term equals a year's course. This is why I'll have new students after Christmas break. We're on a modified year-round block schedule and teach three classes a term which equals six instead of the five a year we taught with the six periods a day schedule. Classes are 90 minutes long. Students can take 8 classes a year which enables them to have more credits but not to graduate early. Some of them have study halls or work in the office or for a teacher during one block. Most of them take four classes but some repeat courses they failed. I have some of those in that infamous 3rd block class with others already on that path. Those are biding their time until they can take the GED while my 4th block class is preparing for the ACT and SAT.
What began as helping children have self-esteem took a turn somewhere into entitlement. Rewarding positive behavior and ignoring the bad hasn't worked too well the way it's been practiced by parents and teachers. Trends come and go in education and parenting, but children need to be taught to think in order to become independent citizens who contribute in a positive way to society. There are cetain
A philosophy I agree with and still use is Hiam Ginott's Between Parent and Child. He believes in letting children realize that they have choices which result in consequences. They understand responsibility for their actions that way. He believes in correcting behavior without attacking the child's personality. It's a kind way to treat people and still maintain boundaries.

I added a new link down there below all the other links in the blue column that calculates the cost of the war. That's the financial cost - there are many other costs that are also too high. I've also added one that shows the phases of the Moon because I think it's neat. I can never keep up with the moon phases. Been reading blogs and tweaking mine again.

Quiz Clarification
The answer to #5 was Mickey Mantle on the Trivial Pursuit card. After Michael pointed out what he did about Mantle, I did a Google search and found that he was not in fact the subject of an FBI investigation but had received threatening letters and came to the attention of the Feds. Here are a couple of links since that made it sound as if Mantle committed a crime and was under investigation. FBI Files and Mantle's File.

Bad Movies
C'mon let's hear from more of you about bad movies you wasted money to see! There are many I didn't bother getting near because of what I heard about them. I do wonder just how bad Gigli is and will see for myself if it gets to cable.
Have any of you watched Coupling who haven't seen it on BBC-America? I can't be objective about it since they use the same scripts, and I've seen it done first, better, and cleverly by the Brits. It's just so bad watching the American version, so I wondered what some of you think about it since it's new to you.

Trivia answers are posted. Thanks for the answers and well done! I always enjoy reading them. What are some horrible movies you've paid to see that were popular and even received awards? Titanic is at the top of my list which that song by Celine Dion only makes worse. All the false endings and running up to gated hallways while water was rushing through and then throwing the necklace in the ocean ... it just goes on and on. I was glad Linda Hamilton divorced James Cameron and thought his Oscar acceptance speech was grounds in itself. I didn't agree with the Scaryduck Florida-type election about Apocalypse Now. What are some movies on your list? Perhaps they need to be in categories.

Comedy
While listening to Comedy College on NPR, I just learned about Ruth Draper, who performed one-woman shows from the 20's through the 50's. I didn't know about her. Lily Tomlin introduced a few of her monologues. You can listen to excerpts here and enjoy what she does. The ones I heard on NPR were a German Lesson to a Class of Children and this hilarious Class on Greek Poise. Her dialects and characters are impeccable. I can't believe I never heard of her. Have any of you?
She must be a relative of Cindy's, who is one of the funniest people I know.

Photos
There are some photos in the album from the birthday brunch at Ellendale's. I've edited the albums and put all of the ones of Brendan in one album and the ones of Kathy and her family together. When I get new photos, I'll put them in the New Photo album and move others around. I'd almost reached my limit of photos to put in there and had to rearrange. Enjoy! I just love the ones of Mother with the children.
It's obvious that Earl needs to give me more lessons. The background shows up really well while the people I was taking the photos of in the gazebo don't. Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. He's also going to show me how to do more than resample and crop photos. I've learned how to do those and am ready for more knowledge.

Trivia Quiz
I just realized that I forgot to post the Trivia Quiz. This last week has been distracting and unsettling, but now here it is!
1. PP - Whose song "Dream a Little Dream of Me" provided the musical background of a TV commercial for Breathe Right Nasal Strips? (is nothing sacred!)
2. AE - What tongue-twisting poem by Lewis Carroll introduces a "Jubjub bird" and a "Bandersnatch"? (just taught that in class and often call Brian "my beamish boy")
3. HS - Where did Thomas Stafford and Alexei Leonov first meet in 1975?
4. SN - What is kinesiology? (take this one, Michelle)
5. SL - Which property on a Monopoly game board is spelled differently than the original Atlantic City street? (who on earth will know this? Michael?)
6. WC - What do you call a territory or a country ruled by a grand duke or a grand duchess? (what about a grand duck, Scary?)
7. MV - Lawrence Fishburne debuts alongside Martin Sheen, Harrison Ford, and Marlon Brando. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning." This Vietnam War film was inspired by the novella Heart of Darkness.

Introspective Break
It's great having this time off. I'm getting some things done and preparing for the rest of the semester. It was a good decision to teach at Creek Wood, and I'm glad I'm there. Janie is doing a good job as principal. This time off will help me go back with renewed energy and plans.
The weather is great. Fall is my favorite season. I hope we have colorful leaves and a clear blue sky we get sometimes. The leaves are just beginning to change. I feel so good in the fall and spring since I don't like it too hot or too cold. Last fall I was just glad I was here and alive but am sort of foggy about it all.
This year I feel good, have energy, and am trying to get my life back under control. Recovering from chaos takes time. I'm going through the top layers of it now and realizing how far I've come and how much farther I have to go with it. The Fab Five said that clutter was evidence of a life that was out of control. As I sort through what needs to be done and make some progress while I quit hiding out and avoiding emotions that are too powerful to face, I know it's going to be so much better once I am on this path. All I have to do is look around and see evidence of how I feel inside. Right now it's not so good. Making outer changes helps the inner ones and vice-versa.
It’s all a spiritual journey anyway with lessons to learn as we go. I’ve been trying to process all that while taking care of paperwork, cleaning, sorting, and organizing. It will come together, and I’ll be back on track soon.

Gift
I forgot to mention yesterday that Brian and Melissa got me the Dead Parrot (he's only sleeping and pines for the fjords). It's a plush toy and the first of all of them I hope to collect. We laughed and laughed about it and quoted lines. Monty Python has provided so many of those for us.

To us!
Mother, Brian, Melissa, Brendan, and I went to Ellendale's for birthday brunch. This was the first day I've had their omelets, and they are delicious! They make them right in front of you and have so many ingredients that the possibilities are amazing. I'll have them everytime I go there for brunch now. I'd like to go again soon. Anyone want to go too?
We have a fall break for the next two weeks. We get two weeks off after every quarter and have finished the first one. Semester break is at Christmas and spring break will be in March. Not bad. I hope I get a lot done during this time off. I have plans, appointments, and obligations. On the way to school Thursday morning I was involved in a fender-bender. A boy changed lanes and his right rear bumper clipped my left front bumper on the corner. His bumper was bent out and the hole in my bumper flared out toward the front of my car, so it's apparent that he cut in too short instead of my pulling out in front and into his truck. No one was hurt, and our vehicles are driveable without much damage. That part is good. It made me nervous, and I don't seem to handle stress too well now, I've noticed. I've had enough drama in my life to last a while and try to keep things on an even keel.
I'll post some photos of Brendan soon from today. He's really growing and is a tall baby. He adores Melissa and she seems happier than I've ever seen her. Brendan recognizes his name and nicknames they call him, too. I'm glad she's staying home with him and taking such good care of him. All my grandchildren have good parents, and I'm so proud of them. They are fortunate children!!

To me!!
Trivia answers have been posted. Well done, my clever friends! :-)
Today is my birthday - a major decade one. Yesterday I erased the board and wrote the date on it for today. This morning my first class asked me what was going on with the year. I looked over and noticed I'd written 10-3-43 on there. I laughed and thought about how much of a habit it is by now to write my birthdate. Then they gasped, "You're SIXTY?" I told them not to rub it in. I keep asking myself how this happened so fast. All of a sudden, here I am! After this last year, I'm glad to be here and am not complaining though!
Kathy sent flowers to school, which was sweet and thoughtful of her. I got some neat and funny cards from cousins and friends - always wonderful when that happens. Thank you very much!! I had a massage after school which I desperately needed, and now we have our fall break for the next two weeks. Yes!! I need that, too.

Work
I had a fairly productive weekend. I'm actually looking forward to our fall break so I can clean house. I feel more energetic and want to accomplish something around here. I also had some time for social activities. Earl and I ate at Applebee's Sunday and enjoyed it. I'm going to take advantage of the Carry-Out service they have there but plan to eat inside by myself some too. Usually I don't like to eat out by myself, but I'm getting better about it.
I love this cooler weather. Fall is my favorite season. I hope we have a pretty one with colorful leaves and those clear blue skies.

Breast Cancer Legislation
There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the "drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home hours after surgery against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.
Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on.
PLEASE!!!! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site and help women living with breast cancer get the care they need and deserve!! There is no cost or monetary pledge involved. You need not give more than your name and zip code number.

Coupling
I enjoy several shows on BBC-America - Coupling being one of them. NBC has copied the show (exact scripts, characters, and all) for the one that premieres tonight. What's the point of that? American TV does that a lot, and what makes the shows good is that they are fresh, new, creative. So what do they do? Right! I'm sure they are trying to find a replacement for Friends, but the way to do that is how that show did it in the first place - the way Seinfeld, Cheers, and other hit shows were different from the way others had been. This review in the Tennessean confirms what I thought about Coupling.

Hell Revisited
'All hope abandon ye who enter here'. Yes, Ol' Dante had it right! I'm just trying to figure out which Circle of Hell I'm in right now with these 9th graders. It's definitely a Circle of Hell-on-Earth, which is possibly different from the ones for all eternity. I'm not really sure how that works since I decided quite some time ago to believe in reincarnation instead. Some days I don't even want that to happen unless I can move on to a more civilized planet next time. But I digress. Here are some conversations with students during the last two days.
Before school ...
Me: What kind of drink did you have in my classroom yesterday?
Clueless Boy Student: Dr. Pepper
Me: Where did you get it?
CBS: The drink machine.
Me: Which one?
CBS: Uh, that one over there.
Me: Are you sure?
CBS: Yeah ... why?
Me: Because yesterday morning when I saw you running out of the social studies workroom which is off-limits to you, you acted guilty.
CBS: Uh .... what?
Me: One of the history teachers is missing about half of the case of Dr. Peppers he had in there. You looked suspicious. Did you take them?
CBS: No
Me: Before you make that your final answer, let me explain what could happen to you if you did it. We'll contact your parents, the principals, and the juvenile judge. If you tell me the truth, I might go easier on you, but if you are lying, and I find out - which I will - it will be much worse. So now, tell me; did you take them?
CBS: Why would I be in trouble for that?
Me: It's stealing. You don't think stealing is bad?
CBS: Well, OK. I did it. I took them. I didn't have any money and wanted them.
Me: Then you can do what the rest of us do when we don't have money and want something. You can do without.
CBS: Why were they in there anyway?
Me: That's not the point. The point is that they were not yours and you stole them and need to do something about it.
CBS: I can pay him for them.
Me: That would be a start.
CBS: You want me to apologize to him?
Me: That would help.
CBS: OK
Me: I'll talk to him and discuss what we need to do about this. What's your parents' phone number?
No remorse, no clue, nothing!!
During class ....
Pesty Male Student: What's your first name?
Other students: Joy. Her name is Joy. It's Joy.
PMS: How did you ever get to be called that?
Female Narcoleptic Student: I had the strangest dream while I was asleep in your class while ago.
Perhaps Dorothy Parker said it best, "What fresh hell is this?" An eternity of it would be redundant.

Scary Joke
This joke was on Scaryduck's blog. With his permission, which I plan to request, here it is .....
Such is the Vatican's love of the Beatles, it has been decreed that when Pope John Paul eventually dies, the next pontiff will take the title Pope George Ringo.
No groans?

What do some of you think about this list? Hey, former Challenge English students who are now sophomores in college, check out #47! Ha!!
This is an interesting article about rescoring the PSATs. See? We English teachers really do sit around and discuss these topics. Scary, isn't it?

Questions
Where did that expression "I serve at the pleasure of the President" originate? I can't find the answer by my usual methods of research - Google and asking people - so I'm now asking more people.
Wonder what Elijah Blue Allman is doing now? He's Cher and Gregg Allman's son, you know. I saw someone on TV playing a guitar who looks the way I think he would look now, which is quite a bit like his father. I read that he has a band named Deadsy.

House Contest
There aren't enough entries for the essay contest for Cathie Pelletier's house, so please enter it and tell others about it. There's a flyer here at the website to print. I'd at least like the chance to win it, so maybe there will be enough entries this time. They need more publicity. Enter! Tell others! If you win, please invite me over!

Isabel
I've been watching the news about Isabel and hope the hurricane doesn't do much damage even though it already has. They are really scary! I was thinking about the people who don't evacuate their homes and know I'd get as far away as I could. NPR said about 100+ people on Ocracoke are staying there. I wonder why.
I had an appointment with my gynecologist Tuesday. He recommended that I get off hormones and said the hot flashes and other symptoms should last from 2-4 weeks. I asked about dwindling down from them and am taking half-strength ones now and will taper off. He said that the effects wear off after about 5 years and that after 55 the risk of breast cancer and heart attacks are higher when on HRT. I've been concerned about cardiac issues and will try to get off of them. I told him if I became psycho again, I would take them again. He said my body wasn't ready to be without hormones after my hysterectomy but is now. I hope so because back then I was either on the verge of tears or ready to get in the tower with a hit list. Not a pleasant situation for me or anyone around me. Maybe this won't be too bad. I hope not. I've warned some people just in case.

Hell in a Handbasket
Some of you who aren't attempting to teach students now might not be aware of how well the dumbing down of America has really worked. We're almost there. We need no color-coded alerts, national security, armed forces, or any protection at all (except for condoms - most of these kids don't need to reproduce). We're destroying ourselves from within. No one else needs to bother since we're handling it well with our sedentary, unhealthy lifestyles of junk food, fast food, computer games, video games, etc. That's just the tip of the iceberg. These kids can't think and don't realize they can't. ADHD is rampant. I talked to the mother of one of my 9th grade students who told me she was giving him a drink called Spark to help him focus, calm down, and concentrate. She said it was made of all natural ingredients and gave me the website so I could see for myself. I told her later I looked at the website and thought the products were interesting. Then I mentioned that the drink had some amino acids that should help and that it also had caffeine in it. She said, "Oh, but he (the developer of the products) said there was no more caffeine in it than in a cup of coffee. He'd get that much in the candy bars and Cokes he drinks." There's nothing to say that would do any good here. Whew!! There might be no hope left for our future.

No Child Left Behind
Since I believe that the No Child Left Behind Act is a ploy by the current misadministration to discredit public education so they can get their vouchers, I decided to post this email I got about it. I think private schools should be judged with the same tests, so there is a basis for comparison. ACT and SAT scores are compared, but it's very similar to the dentist story below.
Subject: No Child Left Behind Act
If you don't understand why educators resent the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT, this may help. If you do understand, you'll enjoy this analogy. It was written by John S. Taylor, Superintendent of Schools for the Lancaster County School District.
The Best Dentist
"Absolutely" the Best Dentist
My dentist is great! He sends me reminders so I don't forget checkups. He uses the latest techniques based on research. He never hurts me, and I've got all my teeth, so when I ran into him the other day, I was eager to see if he'd heard about the new state program. I knew he'd think it was great.
"Did you hear about the new state program to measure effectiveness of dentists with their young patients?" I said.
"No," he said. He didn't seem too thrilled. "How will they do that?"
"It's quite simple," I said. "They will just count the number of cavities each patient has at age 10, 14, and 18 and average that to determine a dentist's rating. Dentists will be rated as Excellent, Good, Average, Below Average, and Unsatisfactory. That way parents will know which are the best dentists. It will also encourage the less effective dentists to get better," I said. "Poor dentists who don't improve could lose their licenses to practice."
"That's terrible," he said.
"What? That's not a good attitude," I said. "Don't you think we should try to improve children's dental health in this state?"
"Sure I do," he said, "but that's not a fair way to determine who is practicing good dentistry."
"Why not?" I said. "It makes perfect sense to me."
"Well, it's so obvious," he said. "Don't you see that dentists don't all work with the same clientele; so much depends on things we can't control? For example," he said, "I work in a rural area with a high percentage of patients from deprived homes, while some of my colleagues work in upper middle class neighborhoods. Many of the parents I work with don't bring their children to see me until there is some kind of problem and I don't get to do much preventive work. Also," he said, "many of the parents I serve let their kids eat way too much candy from an early age, unlike
more educated parents who understand the relationship between sugar and decay. To top it all off," he added, "so many of my clients have well water which is untreated and has no fluoride in it. Do you have any idea how much
difference early use of fluoride can make?"
"It sounds like you're making excuses," I said. I couldn't believe my dentist would be so defensive. He does a great job.
"I am not!" he said. "My best patients are as good as anyone's, my work is as good as anyone's, but my average cavity count is going to be higher than a lot of other dentists because I chose to work where I am needed most."
"Don't get touchy," I said.
"Touchy?" he said. His face had turned red and from the way he was clenching and unclenching his jaws, I was afraid he was going to damage his teeth.
"Try furious. In a system like this, I will end up being rated average, below average, or worse. My more educated patients who see these ratings may believe this so-called rating actually is a measure of my ability and proficiency as a dentist. They may leave me, and I'll be left with only the most needy patients. Any my cavity average score will get even worse.
On top of that, how will I attract good dental hygienists and other excellent dentists to my practice if it is labeled below average?"
"I think you are overreacting," I said. "'Complaining, excuse making and stonewalling won't improve dental health'...I am quoting from a leading member of the DOC," I noted.
"What's the DOC?" he asked.
"It's the Dental Oversight Committee," I said, "a group made up of mostly laypersons to make sure dentistry in this state gets improved."
"Spare me," he said, "I can't believe this. Reasonable people won't buy it," he said hopefully.
The program sounded reasonable to me, so I asked, "How else would you measure good dentistry?"
"Come watch me work," he said. "Observe my processes."
"That's too complicated and time consuming," I said. "Cavities are the bottom line, and you can't argue with the bottom line. It's an absolute measure."
"That's what I'm afraid my parents and prospective patients will think. This can't be happening," he said despairingly.
"Now, now," I said, "don't despair. The state will help you some."
"How?" he said.
"If you're rated poorly, they'll send a dentist who is rated excellent to help straighten you out," I said brightly.
"You mean," he said, "they'll send a dentist with a wealthy clientele to show me how to work on severe juvenile dental problems with which I have probably had much more experience? Big help."
"There you go again," I said. "You aren't acting professionally at all."
"You don't get it," he said. "Doing this would be like grading schools and teachers on an average score on a test of children's progress without regard to influences outside the school, the home, the community served and stuff like that. Why would they do something so unfair to dentists? No one would ever think of doing that to schools."
I just shook my head sadly, but he had brightened. "I'm going to write my representatives and senator," he said. "I'll use the school analogy-surely they will see the point."
He walked off with that look of hope mixed with fear and suppressed anger that I see in the mirror so often lately.
Extra comment by the one who forwarded it: This is certainly true. Another friend who was a hospital administrator said that he thought teachers should be fired if even one child could not learn to read. I reminded him that many of his patients did not leave his facility alive or cured.

Answers Trivial
Answers to the Trivia Quiz are on the first comment section after the questions. Some odd information in there. Thanks again for taking the time to be witty and clever! I enjoy reading what you have to say. Goodness knows I need that now! I'm having a bleak outlook for the future based on my 9th grade English classes - especially one of them. It's looking grim, folks. Not sure I can call myself a teacher now. I try to teach - explain, give examples, write on the board, all that .... but no one seems to hear me. Yes, it's Charlie Brown's teacher up there! That's what I'm doing. Droning away and interrupting their social time with nothing they consider of any importance. Perhaps I need to become a phone sex operator. At least someone would listen. Well, maybe.

Chuckles
I did a Google search and got this picture of a pack of Chuckles. Now we know.
Also this one from How to Speak Geek (so, Michelle, why didn't you know this?).
Network computers (NCs) are PCs minus a hard or floppy drive, which means software applications and files cannot be stored locally. Instead, applications reside on a server. Think of the server as a giant vending machine, a pack of Chuckles as an application and yourself as an NC in dire need of a sugar fix. If, on the other hand, you were a PC, you could swallow 75 cents and self-dispense those chewy red, green and yellow squares. Unlike PCs, NCs cannot run by themselves; they depend on a network. Bottom line: PCs are more powerful than NCs.

Pogo used to say Friday the 13th is on Wednesday this month - or whatever day it happened. I like that and still say it.
Happy day off tomorrow! Mother and I are going to Kathy's for Luke's and her birthday party. We are each taking her a shrubbery!

CHS Class of '36
Mother and I went to her sister Mae's high school reunion yesterday. The Class of '36 from Charlotte High School meets annually for lunch now. Mae has gone for the past few years but didn't attend this time. It was really fun. Two of my high school teachers were there as well as an ex-relative. Daddy's older brother was also in that class. I saw several people there I enjoy conversations with and had a good time. I'm looking forward to being there next year.
We have a good time at our reunions and have mellowed out into a mix of the present while catching up and some nostalgia for our high school experiences. I enjoyed high school but not as much as I did college. I haven't been out of school except for those years before I started, the three years after I had Brian, and last year. I'm looking forward to a life with no bells, longer than half an hour for lunch, not being responsible for the behavior of others, and no papers to grade!

News
Butch called last night to tell me his daughter Amy and Chris are going to have a baby! We are so excited about this wonderful news! They will be such good parents, and we'll have another loved and welcome baby in the family. Brendan will be almost exactly a year older than their baby.
I'm catching up on paperwork since the grading period ended yesterday. I still have tests to grade that I gave yesterday and a couple of sets of papers. Mother and I are going to Kathy's Monday for Kathy's and Luke's birthday party. He'll be 5! I can't believe it. When I first saw him, he was two. She, Kelsey, Sally, and I were all born in years ending in "3" so this is a milestone year for us. Kelsey was 10 in February, Kathy was 40 August 28, Sally was 50 in April, and I'll be 60 in October. How about that? I can't believe I'm this old! When I first started teaching and looked at the teachers there who were probably younger than I am, I remember thinking I'd never teach that long and thought they were ancient. Now here I am in that group!

Lapse
Wow, has it been almost a week since I posted on here? This week has been one of those where all of us teachers kept feeling as if it were lasting forever. "Is it just Tuesday?" "Thursday? It feels like half-way into next week." I was up late every night trying to keep up with school work, gave three tests, graded them, made speeches to my 9th graders about their work ethic, and then slept ten hours Friday night. I'm trying to get a head start on this week and not feel like it's a race.
I got a carpet burn on the top of my foot from yoga. Pretty funny, isn't it? Sure, laugh! Try it! Those poses show me how inflexible my body has become. Thirty-five years and thirty-five pounds ago, yoga wasn't this hard to do. Go figure!

Revival
A friend told me about a woman he works with who refers to herself as a born-again virgin. I thought that was funny and decided to use it myself. After some reflection, it sounds too fresh - too young. Since I've become one of those old, unmarried women who lives alone with cats and was married less than ten years almost three decades ago, I suppose born-again old maid or spinster is more accurate and appropriate. So that's what I'll say instead unless I can think of some way to put a positive spin on this ... which bring us back full-circle to born-again virgin!
That reminds me ... remember those circle pins we used to wear?

Blogs
It's funny how we're all in our own realities. I'll casually mention in conversation that I wrote about something in my blog. When I get a blank stare, I realize that they are as unaware of all this as I was before Amy Nickens encouraged me to write one. When she brought it up, I told her I didn't have anything to say (which as most of you know has never stopped me from talking). Then when I had news I wanted others to know, it helped to have this outlet. It also gave me someone to babble to while I wasn't teaching. Now that I'm back in school standing there feeling like Charlie Brown's teacher while a group of teenagers are tuning me out, I find that I need this even more. What's been so encouraging is to know some people read it and care what I have to say. (well, most of the time anyway) The interaction of the comments is fun. I enjoy the exchanges in the Social Studies Department workroom during lunch and am glad to be there at Creek Wood. There's just something about the blog world that I enjoy, too, and want to continue.

Clinic
I went to the walk-in clinic today and saw the new internist at Horizon, David Ross. I'm glad I happened to see him today since I've needed an internist to see the big picture. He was at the Mayo Clinic and Monty Python and the Holy Grail is also his favorite movie. That's good enough for me! I'm going to go to him regularly in his office.
Anyway, I have some antibiotics and samples of antihistamines. Maybe I can speak in my regular voice soon. School is going pretty well. The faculty there is really friendly. The kids clear out of the school faster than I've ever seen any of them exit a building. Not one of them seems to be on the first floor where my room is. I'll take some photos soon to show you.
